I just spent a wonderful day taking a class. Linda Hall taught us the process of doing embellished feathers. To start the class we drew pages of feathers. It helps to get comfortable with the shape. Then we stitched plain feathers. Last we embellished them. She does beautiful art quilts. Check out her website, http://www.fabricartbylinda.com/ Her quilts are even more impressive in "real life."
